A host of local sailing clubs from Weymouth and Portland took part in Bart’s Bash, the global sailing event in memory of Sailor, Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson over the weekend. The event held in Bart’s name saw 116 boats and 190 people taking to the water in Portland Harbour on Sunday September 20th.

Thousands of sailors from across 62 countries took part in the annual event in aid of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, which uses sailing to transform the lives of young people, both locally and across the world.

The Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre, Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, The Official Training Centre, Chesil Sailability, Weymouth Sailing Club, Castle Cove Sailing Club and Royal Dorset Yacht Club will all be joining together on September 20th to participate in Bart’s Bash, the global sailing event in memory of Olympic gold medallist and America’s Cup sailor, Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson.

Crewsaver, the essential lifesaving equipment and clothing manufacturer, is delighted to announce that it will, for a second year, be providing on the water clothing and safety equipment for both participants and instructors of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre.  
 
Over its first year the Centre has enjoyed an enormous amount of success; over 4,000 participants have been through the centre to date, ranging from complete beginners new to the sport and learning how to sail, to keen racers looking to improve on their skills.

On Saturday 9th May hundreds of people came along to the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre to help celebrate its first birthday.

The sailing centre invited the local community to take part in the celebration and it couldn’t have been a more incredible day.

As the rain clearer and the sunshine appeared, from 11am, there were opportunities to sail on the Olympic waters with free sailing tasters for children aged five and over, with some of the British Sailing Team taking people some very excited people sailing in the afternoon.

As the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre approaches its first birthday on May 9th 2015 it’s already celebrating with a new and highly experienced team at the helm.

Alex Porter has taken over as Centre manager. Alex has over 18 years’ experience in the sailing industry. As a qualified RYA Coach Assessor and RYA Yacht Master Alex will use his experience to build the Centre, working with schools, youth groups and clubs as well as offering a full range of sailing, racing, instructing and coaching courses.
